The largest theatre event ever in Scotland,
putting Scottish drama on a truly international stage, The
Ship ran for 11 weeks in 1990 to packed houses. Specially
commissioned as part of Glasgow's year as European City
of Culture, the production was written by Bill Bryden with
set design by William Dudley and music by John Tams. The
drama based on the heyday of Clyde shipbuilding took place
in a purpose built 'ship' in the former engine shed of Harland
and Wolff at Govan on the Clyde. The cast comprised the
best of the Scottish acting world. Phil was Music Director
for the production leading 'The Ship's Band'. A Special
Gala Performance was held on September 27th in the presence
of HRH Princess Anne, in aid of Save The Children. |
Following the success of 'The Ship' , Ross Harper CBE
described 'The Big Picnic' as "another brilliant production
which will take its rightful place in the history of the
world theatre. Based on World War I, this production in
1994 featured virtually the same cast and crew. Phil was
Associate Music Director and also wrote part of the music
along with John Tams. "In my professional life I have never had closer collaboration
than with Bill Dudley, John Tams, Phil Cunningham, Stuart
Hopps and Sebastien Graham-Jones. The parts of this show
that are theirs are sometimes hard to measure... This is
genuine collaboration and the work of a fine creative family"
